WP 5 – Local wind systems

Objectives

  • To describe the local wind systems in SEE
  • To describe the local wind systems at the pilot wind parks
  • To re-evaluate the wind data of the met station Mostar (Podvelez, BH)
  • To make wind forecasts for the pilot sites

Description of work

  • Description of the local wind systems in SEE
    • Describe the characteristics of the local wind systems in SEE (mainly Bora [Bura] and Jugo [Scirocco])
    • Assemble a comprehensive literature list on wind phenomena and wind potential in SEE (in contact with local met institutes, universities, harbours and other facilities as well as from the ALPEX and MAP experiments)
    • Create a website with links to information about SEE local wind systems sorted by topics and their relevance for wind energy (in cooperation with WP2)
  • Description of the local wind systems at the pilot wind park sites
    • Put the simulation and measurement results of WP3, WP5 and WP6 into context with the local wind systems in SEE
    • Create ‚wind event form‘ to record damage or failure events at the pilot wind parks caused by local wind extremes
    • Analyse collected forms and put them into context with the local wind systems
    • Add results to the report about the local wind systems in SEE (task no.1)
  • Re-evaluation of Mostar wind data
    • Reconstruction of 10-minute wind data from the paper wind charts of the met station Mostar (BH, WMO-No. 133480) as input for micro-scale modelling of WP7 (10 years period)
  • Wind forecast for pilot wind parks
    • Set up of the meso-scale model MM5 as forecast model for SEE (model setup optimised by findings of task no. 1, input from WP6 and contact with local met institutes)
    • Find key parameters which drive the wind systems at the pilot wind park sites (Direct Model Output DMO mainly of pressure and temperature gradients at selected points)
    • Compare model output with on site measurements WP3, met stations)
    • Optimise model setup and process model output to improve forecast quality
    • Set up 24 h wind forecast for pilot wind parks on project website
